The Isle of Harris

Leverburgh on the Isle of Harris
I think most visitors to the Isle of Harris, in the Outer Hebrides/Western Isles of Scotland, will agree that the small island is one of the most beautiful places in the whole of Britain. Around virtually every turn of the road is a new and wonderful vista awaiting your arrival. Unfortunately this can cause some problems to drivers unacustomed to the island and we strongly suggest that you read the article "Driving On The Isle Of Harris" or one I wrote for Ezine @articles "Driving In The Hebrides" to gain an understanding about how to drive on such unique roads safely, even if you think you know what to expect these articles cover some aspects of which many drivers are unaware until they are faced by them.
IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTE
If you plan to spend some time walking on the hills and moors of the Hebrides it is crucially important to dress accordingly. I can not emphasis enough how important it is to go prepared for bad weather. The weather on the Isle of Harris can be just as changeable, if not more so, than on the Scottish mainland. Changes in weather can be more extreme the higher you are and even if it is a gloriously hot and sunny day when you set off the wind can suddenly pick up, mist descend, rain fall or it can suddenly go extremely cold. Always wear good walking boots, take a hot drink and cold drinks and ensure that you carry a waterproof jacket.
Probably the most important thing is to let people know exactly where you are going and when they should expect you back home. If there is nobody local that you can let know you should let somebody back home know when you are setting off and when they should expect a call from you saying that you have arrived back safely. Although I do not know of any unfortunate accidents I would hate to see one happen!
